Sketches: Line and Colour

Examples of recent works in progress which develop earlier ink drawings into layered, coloured compositions. The original drawings from which the colour images are derived are shown below, the black ink lines forming a compositional structure on which additional areas of colour and different weights of lines are placed. These studio explorations remain in development and subsequent works in the series will be posted on Carbon Particles in the near future.

About this Blog

Carbon Particles documents new projects by artist Charley Peters, whose work explores the liminal space in between chance and control. Interested in the pure aesthetic of line, her drawings are created as a response to material placed within a defined space: ink on paper, tape on walls, stretched yarn. Peters engages with labour intensive and process-based practices, where repetition and/or site specificity encourages generative methods of drawing. Employing visual systems that embrace both logical and intuitive processes of production, drawn lines are repeated, interrupted or transformed through physical, mechanical or architectural interventions. For Peters, drawing is a tool for active engagement and response - a reflexive and open-ended medium, which, through her practice, is constantly evolving in reaction to material and spatial concerns.

Peters is a member of London-based TBC Artists' Collective, who self-publish a magazine, 12-Pages and work on projects that interrogate individual members’ use of drawing practices. TBC are involved with collaborative art projects, and work together to curate, participate and facilitate the production of new work with an expanding group of international associate members. Peters, along with other TBC members Beverley Bennett and Laura Davidson, are actively engaged in research-led projects that explore drawing as a performative, interventionist or documentary medium, moving the act of solitary mark making out of the studio and into a collaborative, interactive environment.
